MSOS: About our Training Courses

MSOS is approved by the MCA to provide training courses such as Medical First Aid and Medical Care, whilst also offering specialist courses on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the use of oxygen and defibrillators, advanced wound repair and more. MSOS also provide kit familiarisation courses designed to give crew members hands-on experience, upon delivery of a new kit to a vessel.

MSOS courses place emphasis on teaching practical skills which will be of benefit in the event of medical problems offshore. The courses are designed to teach crew how to use the equipment and medicines provided in their medical kits.

Our range of courses are held at our MSOS training centres in Palma, Southampton, and Fort Lauderdale, or can also be held on board the client’s vessel.

All MSOS training instructors are medically qualified and have extensive experience as sailors. They know what it’s like to deal with anything from a sore throat in the North Atlantic, to a broken leg on the foredeck of a boat in the Southern Ocean.

At MSOS we run four different training courses as well as offering bespoke courses:

MCA Proficiency in Elementary First Aid:

Our MCA Proficiency in Elementary First Aid (MCA EFA) is a one-day training course where crew are trained to be a ‘first responder’. This includes how to assess patients, and how to respond to medical and trauma emergencies. This course also includes an update on resuscitation skills such as basic life support and advanced life support.

MCA Proficiency in Medical First Aid:

Our MCA Proficiency in Medical First Aid (MCA MFA) is a four-day training course. This course teaches crew how to provide emergency first aid in the case of an accident causing trauma, or in the event of sudden medical illness.

MCA Proficiency in Medical Care:

Our MCA Proficiency in Medical Care (MCA MC) is a five-day training course. In common with our shorter courses, the MCA MC course holds an emphasis on a wider range of practical skills, with the opportunity to revisit practical skills sessions during the five days – a process of ‘spiral learning’.

MCA Updated Proficiency in Medical Care:

The MCA Updated Proficiency in Medical Care (MCA UMC) course is a three-to-four-day course. This course should be undertaken every five years, to keep the MCA Proficiency Course in-date. This course is usually three days but can be extended to four depending on the requirements of the crew.

Bespoke Courses

We design and run specialised, bespoke courses for specific client requirements, such as in-water rescue, wilderness medicine, first aid for children, oxygen administration and casualty evacuation. There is a distinct advantage in holding these courses on the client vessel, to increase the situational awareness of crew. Courses can focus on existing client medical kit and equipment, or trialling new items.
